Dholera's connectivity rests on five pieces at very different stages. The 109 km Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway is operational, reported inaugurated on 31 March 2026. A dedicated Dholera International Airport about 20 km away is under construction, with operations targeted for 2026 but no confirmed date. A semi-high-speed rail line from Ahmedabad was reported cleared in May 2026 with a target of 2030 to 2031. A metro or MRTS link was reported approved in 2021 but its current status is unclear. A Bhimnath-Dholera freight line is long-proposed with no current timeline. So today the region is reachable by road, with air, rail and freight links still being built or planned.
Connectivity is the argument for Dholera. A greenfield industrial city only works if people and goods can move in and out easily, so the region's roads, airport and rail get more attention than almost anything else. This hub page pulls the five connectivity pieces together in one place, with the honest status of each. Some are operational, some are under construction, and some are still on paper. Every figure comes from verified sources, and every date that is a target rather than a fact is labelled as such. For deep dives, each section links to its dedicated entry.

The connectivity picture at a glance
Think of Dholera's connectivity as a road that is done, an airport and rail that are coming, and a metro and freight line that are uncertain. The table below is the quickest way to see where each stands in 2026. Everything after it explains the detail.
| Link | Status (2026) | Key figures | Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway | Operational | 109 km, 4-lane, 120 km/h design | Open, reported Mar 2026 |
| Dholera International Airport | Under construction | 3,200 m runway, Code 4E, ~20 km from SIR | Operations targeted 2026, no firm date |
| Semi-high-speed rail | Planned / cleared | ~134 km double line, ~Rs 20,667 cr | 2030 to 2031 |
| Metro / MRTS | Uncertain | Ahmedabad to DSIR link | Reported approved 2021, status unclear |
| Bhimnath-Dholera freight line | Proposed | DMIC freight link | No current timeline |
Road: the expressway that is already open
The Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway is the one connectivity piece you can use today. It is a 109 km, four-lane, access-controlled greenfield road built by NHAI, designed for 120 km/h and expandable to eight lanes. It was reported inaugurated on 31 March 2026 and is operational. Reported travel time from Ahmedabad has fallen from about 2 to 2.25 hours to roughly 40 minutes to 1 hour, though sources vary, so plan for up to an hour. FASTag tolling is planned but rates are not reliably sourced. Construction cost is reported at about Rs 3,196 crore, or about Rs 4,373 crore with land, depending on scope. For routes and timing, see how to reach Dholera.
Air: the airport under construction
Dholera is building its own airport, Dholera International Airport, about 20 km from the SIR and roughly 80 km from Ahmedabad. Its first phase has a single 3,200 m runway rated Code 4E. It is run through a special-purpose vehicle, Dholera International Airport Company Ltd, with AAI holding 51 percent, Gujarat 33 percent and NICDC 16 percent. Phase-1 civil works were awarded to Varaha Infrastructure at about Rs 636.45 crore, with a terminal EPC of about Rs 333 crore reported in January 2024. On timing, the original December 2025 target was missed, one reference lists December 2026, and as of 14 July 2026 the Union Aviation Minister was reported to have said the project was about 80 percent complete with operations likely in September to October 2026. None of these is a confirmed opening, so treat them as targets. The total consolidated project cost is not reliably sourced. See the Dholera airport entry.
Rail: semi-high-speed line, planned
The biggest future upgrade is rail. An Ahmedabad (Sarkhej) to Dholera semi-high-speed rail line was reported cleared by the CCEA around 13 May 2026, at a reported cost of about Rs 20,667 crore, as a roughly 134 km double line, with a target of 2030 to 2031 and a reported journey time of about 45 minutes. A cited top speed of 220 km/h comes from limited sourcing and sits oddly with the semi-high-speed label, so treat it as reported and unconfirmed. This is a plan and a target, not an operating line. It would give Dholera a fast, high-capacity link to Ahmedabad that road alone cannot match.
Metro or MRTS: reported but uncertain
An Ahmedabad to Dholera SIR metro or MRTS link was reported approved around January 2021, but its current status is unclear and it may overlap with or be superseded by the 2026 semi-high-speed rail plan. Because the two ideas cover a similar corridor, it is possible the metro concept has folded into the rail programme. Until there is clearer official information, treat the metro link as reported and its present status as unknown rather than active. See the Dholera metro and MRTS entry.
Freight: the long-pending line
For goods, the key proposal is a Bhimnath-Dholera freight line, proposed under the DMIC around 2013. It has been long-pending with no current timeline. Separately, a direct Western Dedicated Freight Corridor spur to Dholera is not reliably sourced; Dholera sits within the DMIC influence zone anchored on the Western DFC, but a dedicated connection is not confirmed. So heavy-freight rail access remains a plan rather than a built link, which matters for the industrial and semiconductor tenants the region is courting. For the industrial context, see the semiconductor ecosystem.
How the pieces fit together
Put together, the connectivity story is sequenced. The expressway came first and is the working spine today. The airport is next in line, targeted for 2026, and would open Dholera to national and international travel and high-value air cargo. Semi-high-speed rail follows toward 2030 to 2031, adding mass, fast passenger capacity. Metro and freight are the least certain, one possibly absorbed into the rail plan and the other long-pending. For an investor or business, the practical read is that road access is real now, air is close, and rail is a medium-term promise. Judge the region on what is built plus what is credibly under construction, not on the full future grid. For the region overview, see what the Dholera SIR is.
